I have long been telling clients the benefits of owning your own home. However now it appears that the National Association of Realtors and Realty Times have data to show why it is good for you in more ways than one!
Everyone knows that maintaining a home is hard work, however asides from the sense of pride that it brings to manicure your lawn [See Homeownership 101 - Winter Lawn Care!], there are some benefits which make homeownership worthwhile – naturally the biggest benefit, particularly in this market is future wealth – prices are low, mortgage rates are low and there is a great selection of inventory. Of course this co-incides with the thought of growing your home equity – through appreciation and paying down your mortgage – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) notes that “home equity is the largest single source of household wealth for most Americans. So in an appreciating market, with the average historically being 6.5% per year – homeownership is a sound investment strategy. Particularly with the mortgage interest deduction.
There are other hidden factors which are part of the positive experience of homeownership. Studies have shown that owning your own home can make you healthier and make children happier and more successful at school according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It allows people control over their living environment and helps stabilize and strengthen communities – you will always here me talking about the great community spirit which Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates and Bartlett IL all have – this stems from this. Also according to the National Homeownership Strategy it helps jobs and the economy.
The National Association of Realtor’s Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing document says that homeownership also brings: Higher educational performance and better behavior of children, lower crime rates, more participation in civic affairs and better household health!
