We all know that when it comes to homeownership the best advice that you can take is: “be prepared for the unexpected!” it really is a case of plan for the worst and hope for the best. Not that there is anything wrong with owning your own home, but as a homeowner you have responsibilities to keep your home in a good state of repaire not just for yourself, but often for your lender and potential neighborhood association.
As a new homeowner this can seem overwhelming, but in practice is isn’t much of a burden. Being smart and using common sense is the key. Today, I wanted to mention the subject of Sump Pumps, while not a very exciting topic, it is one that is of great importance to homeowners who have a basement and who my be prone to some flooding.
Sump Pumps have long been used in basements around the world to remove water that has collected in a sump basin where a basement is constructed below the water table in an area. As explained by Wikipedia: “There are generally two types of sump pumps — pedestal and submersible. The pedestal pump’s motor is mounted above the sump, where it is more easily serviced, but is also more conspicuous… The submersible pump is entirely mounted inside the sump, and is specially sealed to prevent electrical short circuits.”
Most pumps are hardwired into the property’s electrical system, however some of them have a battery back up in the event of a power failure, which may likely happen during a disaster scenario such as a bad storm, flooding etc. A battery back up can prevent a basement flooding during a power failure making it the best way to ensure that you have a functioning sump pump, when you need it most! If you are a homeowner who doesn’t have a battery backup sump pump, consider installing one, particularly if you think your main pump has seen better days.
