As I wrote just the other day, now is the “Time to buy a home in Schaumburg, Bartlett & Hoffman Estates, IL ” but, if you are about to take the plunge and purchase one of the many great properties for sale in the local Northwest Suburbs market, have you thought about what housing type might be best for you?
Just the other day, I was reading a great article on RealtyTimes which inspired me to write this piece, often people think that they need to buy a certain type of house and not really thinking if it suits their needs. For instance, if you travel a lot for work, then perhaps a maintenance heavy single family home won’t suit you and a condominium that is easily locked up and left would be more preferable?
So here are your choices of home style:
1. Single Family Homes - This is pretty much the most popular choice as it is flexible in its use, meaning that it is perfect for almost anyone! Young, old, single, partner-ed, with kids or without, the single family home is king when it comes to home choice. This type of property is the most independent, offering, typically a detached dwelling with a yard with its own heating, plumbing and electrical system. Single Family homes offer independence but also a lot of responsibility as they are often larger than other home types and as you are “on your own” generally you are responsible for maintenance of the property. This is particularly important as many single family homes are constructed in planned urban developments with many having covenants, conditions, and restrictions in place to preserve the look and feel of the neighborhood.
2. Duplex – This type of property shares a roof and one wall with another separate property. This type of home is perfect for those looking to live in one part and rent out the other or use as a self contained unit for an elderly relative for example.
3. Townhouse – Often a row of houses that share a wall and common areas. Townhouses can be a great choice for many buyers, offering many of the features of a single family home but with less maintenance.
4. Condominiums – Condos are probably the second most popular home type after single family homes, condos are units that on the face of it, look very much like apartments, but they are individually owned by a homeowner. Condos often offer very low maintenance living with the residents association looking after much of the maintenance for the building. Maintenance fees are charged each month to the homeowner to pay for this along with the up keep of common areas such as hallways, stairways, elevators, parking lots etc. Condos can be perfect for those who want a manageable living space, generally condos are smaller but this isn’t always the case.
