Snow Advice in Schaumburg, IL – Chicagoland NW Suburban IL Real Estate & Community

Snow is very much a part of the midwest and great lakes climate in the winter time. Usually it is on it’s way out at this time of year, but it seems that our current winter has brought more cold weather and snow than usual. Here in Schaumburg, the Village of Schaumburg would like to remind homeowners and residents of some important tips when it comes to snow in Schaumburg:

1. There is the Schaumburg Snow Command Center coordinates the removal of snow, sleet, and ice on village roads, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Village is responsible for providing snow and ice control for 219 centerline miles of streets and 679 cul-de-sacs.

2. Residents are responsible for plowing, blowing, or shoveling driveways, parkways, and public sidewalks adjoining their homes.

3. Not all roads in Schaumburg are plowed by Village of Schaumburg crews. Some are maintained by other agencies and are their responsibility. Find out more here.

4. Common sense & local ordinances: Do not blow or shovel show into the street. This creates dangerous ice patches and just forces the roads to be cleared again. It is also a violation of village code. Similarly with parking, it is unlawful to park on any public street after two inches of snow has fallen.

5. Watch your mailbox! These can get damaged during street clearing. So be alert!  If your mailbox is damaged or destroyed the mail box will be repaired or replaced with a standard type mail box, in accordance with established guidelines. The village of Schaumburg won’t replace decorative mail boxes so a standard design will be used for all mailbox replacements. Therefore homeowners who have a cherished customized/personalized mailbox, be aware that you have this at your own risk if it gets damaged during snow clearing!

6. Fire Hydrants need to be accessible at all times. This is common sense no matter what the weather, but particularly important during heavy snowfall as they can be buried and then a hazard during clearing.  During heavy snowstorms, crews are not available to clear out fire hydrants and mailboxes. Residents are asked to shovel snow to provide access to hydrants and mailboxes on or around your property.

7. Blocked Driveways are a pain but it is unavoidable. When crews plow the main streets the snow can end up blocking the end of your drive. So use common sense and do not block the roadway or approach the truck to avoid snow plowed into the driveway. These actions are dangerous and only prolong the road clearing process. You might want to wait for the road to be completely cleared so that you only shovel once. This can cause heavy piles of snow in front of driveways during heavy snowstorms. The village encourages residents to shovel several times throughout a heavy snowstorm so that there isn’t too much snow piled up at one time.

 

If you have any further questions for the Village of Schaumburg about it’s snow policies then you can dial 311 within Schaumburg or create a online Customer Service Request (CSR). Outside the Village you need to call the village, call 847.882.3586.

Remember that it you are in need of Police or Fire Assistance always call 911. A phone call placed to other village entities will only delay response time. Village crews work with Police and Fire to ensure that there is a clear roadway for emergency services.

Beyond this advice, be neighborly. Help those in need. Some residents in your neighborhood may be elderly, infirm or disabled and have difficulty in moving snow from their driveway and sidewalk. So help out if you can. Remember keeping sidewalks clear near schools and recreation centers is so important to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

While this winter may have been a long one, spring is on it’s way soon!
