History and the study of the founding of a location can be fascinating. Here in Bartlett, we are priviledged to have our great Bartlett IL History Museum.
Back in the depths of time, in its earliest form, the Village of Bartlett, Illinois was an old-time camping and hunting ground for the Potawatomi, Ottawa, Miami, and Cherokee Indians. Throughout its early beginnings it was under the rule of Spain, France, Virginia, England and more! Therefore, if not for the fortuitous intersection of the Chicago and Pacific Railway and 40 acres of land belonging to farmer Luther Bartlett our fantastic village may not be what it is today! From humble beginnings, we grew to a population of 2,291 people as shown in the 1960 Census through to the thriving community of 40,000 today! Bartlett really is steeped in history!
Bartlett benefits from a fantastic history museum - Recently relocated in 2005 to its current location at the Bartlett Village Hall on 228 S. Main Street, the museum now features a third larger exhibit area, more archive space and a multi-purpose room.
Bartlett’s roots aside, the museum’s history itself, go all the way back to 1973, before the nations bicenttennial celebration. Residents formed a local Historical Society with the goal of collecting artifacts on Bartlett and US History.
However despite temporary storage and display space for these items, the dream of a proper, dedicated exhibit space was realized back in 1983 and then later a new home in 1986. From then on in the late 80′s and 1990′s the museum and its program of events and exhibits grew and grew!
Today, home for the Bartlett History Museum is a 1,200-foot area on the first floor of the new Village Hall. The exhibit space is located right off the hall’s main entrance and is inviting to everyone who visits. Cases, boards and two showcase rooms hold and highlight the current artifacts and photos on display. Click here for the latest on current exhibits.
The Museum is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon. It is closed on Sunday. There is no admission fee. Tours by individuals or groups can be arranged. This is definitely a great couple of hours out with family and friends on a rainy afternoon.
Bartlett really is priviledged to offer a high quality of life for its residents. No wonder people want to relocate here!
